Governor Chimaroke Nnamani of Enugu State
has said the recent rating of his administration as the best
among the 36 states of the federation by the National Planning
Commission and foreign aid agencies is a vindication of many
years of hardwork and commitment of his government to bring
about the highest level of improvement in the quality of life
in the state.
A performance rating
conducted by the National Planning Commission [NPC] and
international donor agencies including World Bank, UNDP, DFID
USAID and CIDA released on Wednesday, had ranked Enugu State
as the best performing state in the federation in terms of
policy formulation, budget and fiscal management, service
delivery, communication and transparency in Nigeria under the
current democratic dispensation.
Enugu scored 57.22 percent
to top the table and was closely followed by FCT and Osun
which scored 50.28 and 45.72 per cent respectively.
The state branch of the
apex- Igbo socio-cultural Orgaization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo
has also described the feat as well deserved, saying that what
was going on in the state in terms of infrastructural
development surpassed those of other states even though the
state was one of the lowest in terms of revenue
allocation.
The governor who was
reacting to the development told reporters in Enugu that the
rating was "a proof that the government meant every word when
it said it would give Enugu State the most qualitative
leadership and raise the quality of life to the highest
standards".
The governor, who spoke
through his Special Assistant [Public Affairs], Chief Ayogu
Eze, added that the rating was more challenging as the
government would now embrace more development and reform
efforts.
He said; "It is a
vindication of what we have been saying that Enugu is a show
-me state. Whereas in Enugu, we are not actually jubilating,
it is instead more fuel for more work. We are going to take
our reform effort to the next level. We give God the thanks
and the governor is grateful to the citizens of the state
without whose support and loyalty, these achievements would
have been impossible and we thank the NPC and the agencies for
their objectivity".
In his congratulatory
remarks, chairman of Ohanaeze in Enugu State, Chief
Bernard Eze said the rating was well deserved giving the
achievements that had been recorded even with relatively lower
revenue allocations.
He attributed the governor’s
records of achievements to his unalloyed commitment to
improving the lots of Enugu people and his experience in the
management of human and material resources.
He remarked that under the
governor’s administration that a number of things that people
had thought hitherto were impossible to accomplish were done
with relative ease.
Referring to such perojects
as the permanent site of the Enugu State university of science
and Technology,[ESUT], Ebeano tunnel crossing, Teaching
Hospital, Eze said that it would have a surprise if Enugu
State did not earn the rating given to it by the international
agencies.
He said; "The achievements
are innumerable but one about the feat is that it shows the
transparency and honesty with which Governor Nnamani has
administered the state. A situation where many governors in
Nigeria are afraid of oversea trips for fear of the long arm
of the EFCC and ICPC, the governor travelled overseas and
spent seven days and still came back without any
hitch". |
