Nnamani lauded over NYSC Support
February 1, 2007

The Enugu State Chairman of the NYSC Governing Board, Barrister Ray Nnaji, has thanked Governor Chimaroke Nnamani for his support and assistance to the NYSC in the state and equally for his prompt response to the plight and welfare of serving corps members in the state, as well as his directive to all corps employers in the state to offset the arrears of allowances owed to them.

Mr. Nnaji, who is also the state Commissioner for Sports, announced this during the passing out ceremony of the NYSC 2006 Batch “A” corps members in Enugu State said that one of the corps members from the state was adjudged the overall best corps members in the country for the period.

According to him, four Batch “A” corps members who served in Enugu State were among those who won the prestigious Presidential Award for distinguishing themselves in their various areas of primary assignment during the 2006 Service year.

Mr. Nnaji stated that thirteen corps members who served in the state were also honoured with the State Merit Award.

According to Mr. Nnaji, the corps members initiated and completed some community development service projects such as HIV/AIDS awareness campaign, setting up of libraries, erecting of toilets, literacy campaign, donations to indigent pupils and students in primary and secondary schools, and so on.

In his speech, the NYSC state coordinator, Mr. Augustine Arokoyo, said that 1,646 corps members had successfully completed their service year, adding that eight corps members would repeat the service year due to different offences and negligence while seven others were sanctioned.

Mr. Arokoyo expressed happiness that corps members not only performed creditably but also executed some vital development projects in their various host communities.

“I am glad to say that these corps members not only took their primary assignments seriously, but also embarked and completed community development projects initiated by some of them in their various host communities where they served,” he said.

He advised the outgoing corps members to utilize the experience gained during the service year to be self-reliant than to hope for white collar jobs which might not come soon.

He thanked and appreciated the support and assistance of the state government to the scheme and the people of Enugu State for their hospitality.

Earlier, the state government had organized a send forth party for the corps members at the Hotel Presidential, Enugu.
