Enugu warns land allottees against abandonment
Sept. 13, 2006
The Enugu State Government has warned land allottees in the state who have not developed allocated lands within the time frame stipulated in their allocation papers to do so or risk revocation.

The Commissioner for Information, Mr. Igbonekwu Ogazimoarh, handed down the warning while briefing the Press after the Executive Council Meeting at the Government House, Enugu.

Mr. Ogazimorah said that what informed government's policy on liberation of lands in the state is to ensure physical development and to boost the economy of the state.

"Government is saying and actually requesting these persons to move into lands allocated to them either for residential, business or commercial purposes... Government is asking allottees to please always act within the time frame contained in the condition of allocation", he said.

He also warned those that are in the habit of acquiring market stalls which they never develop to desist from such act, pointing out that such act hinders genuine developers from bringing development to the state.

According to the Commissioner, "Government learned that some persons are in the habit of getting market stalls which are never built up or when they are built up, are never really occupied."

The Commissioner, expressing the worry of the Executive Council over the security of the people, advised the citizens wishing to engage the services of gatemen or domestic workers to ensure that these persons were well known to them.

He also advised that employers may wish to consult the Police Public Relations Unit of the State Police Command for advice on such security issues, , pointing out that there were cases of robbery and theft resulting from engaging the services of unknown persons.

According to the commissioner, the Executive Council received reports that, perhaps, due to infiltration from neighbouring states, especially such areas where armed forces were deployed to help in security measures, there appears to be increased activities of thieves and armed robbers.

The Executive Council also called on the people to endeavour to respect the plurality of religion and not to destroy items of worship of others, be it shrine or deities.

"The Government of Enugu State does not support any religion ahead of the other and is now asking individuals, groups or societies engaging in such vitriolic statements or actions negating the freedom of worship in the state, to desist or they are seen as enemies and trouble makers" he said.

The Commissioner reminded Chairmen of Local Government Areas and Development Centers in the state to take steps to secure infrastructure provided by government in their localities.

He also said that the chairmen were expected to sensitize and mobilize their subjects to support and appreciate government programmes designed to better their living standard.
