October 5, 2006

The Governor of Enugu State, Chimaroke Nnamani, has described the visit of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence to the State as yet an opportunity for him to pay respect to the National Assembly, which he called "that famous democratic institution in the land."

Governor Nnamani stated this when he received in audience members of the committee who were in the state to organize a public hearing on local government administration in the state.

The Governor commended the leader and members of the committee for their role in the Upper House and said that by the time they would complete their sitting in the state, they would be convinced that his administration was committed to transparency and due process.

The State Chief Executive assured the committee that government would give them all the needed cooperation to carry out their assignment without hitches.

He explained that their visit as moulders of opinion was in line with constitutional democracy, adding that at the end, they would see that Enugu was working and that the people were also happy.

Responding, the leader of the team, Senator Nuhu Aliyu, told the Governor that they were on a fact-finding mission on the operation of local government system in the state, pointing out that the issue of the local government election and other related matters were entirely the responsibility of the state.

Senator Aliyu stated that during the visit, they would hold a public sitting and also hold discussions with relevant individuals and bodies, including the Speaker of the State House of Assembly and local government officials.

The Senator said that as members of the National Assembly and as contained in the constitution, the assignment was part of their oversight functions.

He used the occasion to restate the determination of the Senators to ensure the sustenance of democracy, adding that they would do their best to ensure that it worked.

The Senator thanked the Governor for the reception accorded them and the arrangements made to ensure that they never had any obstacle in the discharge of their assignment.
