The Enugu State caucus of the National Assembly has
prevailed on Governor Chimaroke Nnamani to contest the 2007
presidential elections. Addressing the press yesterday, the
caucus, comprising Senator Ike Ekweremadu and seven House of
Representative members, said Governor Nnamani remained the
only person that could sustain the reform programme of
President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Spokesman for the group Senator Ekweremadu said Also
present at the media briefing were Kanayo Oguakwa, Ogbuefi
Ozomgbachi, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Martins Oke, Charles Ugwu and
Prince Gordi Agbo, all members of the House of
Representatives. “As you know, the Enugu State caucus of
the National Assembly paid a courtesy visit to the governor of
Enugu State, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani at the Government House,
Enugu, where we appealed to him to offer himself to the
service of the Nigerian people by contesting the presidency of
the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “We, as federal
legislators and active players within the polity of the
Nigerian nation-state, had studied the recurrent issues of
growth and development of our country and came to the
inevitable conclusion that what Nigeria needs in the months
following May 29, 2007, is a man capable of patriotic and
courageous service,” the caucus members stated.
There was need to continue with President Obasanjo’s reform
programmes which he said only Governor Nnamani could
follow through to the end. The caucus enumerated the
developmental changes Governor had brought to Enugu since his
assumption of office in 1999, adding that Enugu has witnessed
tremendous progress which had placed it in the good books of
ambassadors of Western countries of the world. They said:
“Our experience in Enugu State since 1999 under Governor
Nnamani is similar to the experience which Nigeria has had
throughout the Obasanjo years in so many ways, and we believe
that if given tthe opportunity, Dr. Nanamani can expand and
replicate same across Nigeria, building as it were, upon the
solid and enduring foundations laid by President Obasanjo.
“Enugu has witnessed tremendous improvement in
infrastructural development, human capacity development,
public sector, health and education sectors reform, and the
mobilisation of the entire citizenry into a vibrant and
cohesive reservoir of development energy, never before seen in
those parts.” According to the National Assembly members,
Enugu State has become a haven for private sector investments
with the springing up of industries and other businesses which
were thriving to the benefit of all at the moment. The
National Assembly members noted the giant strides in
transparency and accountability that the state had been noted
for.
