Nnamani mourns Sultan Maccido, others
OCtober 29, 2006

Governor Chimaroke Nnamani of Enugu State has described as gruelling the news of yet another air disaster in Nigeria, of an ADC plane that killed over hundred passengers on board, including the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Maccido.

Reacting to the news on Sunday in Enugu, Governor Nnamani described the air crash as an extremely painful occurrence that lacks an adequate phrase to capture it.

While decrying the spate of air disasters in Nigeria, the governor said it was high time Nigerians conducted a thorough examination of the physical as well as the spiritual undertones of the air crashes, stating that it was only then that a solution could be got to what he called the "frequently disturbing agonies of the crashes".

He particularly lamented that each time these crashes occur, they cream off the creme de la creme of Nigerian society, stating that the present crash was a testimony to the tendency of death to rob the country of those whose inputs were needed to lift the country forward.

He mourned the death of the Sultan, Alhaji Maccido, at a time like this when his sagacity and fatherliness were needed, describing him as a foremost theo-cultural leading light in Nigeria whose spiritual leadership of his people was unparalleled.

Governor Nnamani said that Nigerians would miss the Sultan for his fatherly and statesmanly intervention in the affairs of the country, stating that he remained a force to be reckoned with in the affairs of the country.

While praying God to grant the repose of the souls of the "departed compatriots," Governor Nnamani urged Nigerians to pray fervently in their closets to God so as to ensure devine intervention in the aviation sector which only, he said, could halt the trend of periodic colossal losses that the country suffers from air disasters.

Governor Nnamani commiserated with Governor Attahiru Bafarawa and the people of Sokoto State for the multiple losses they suffered in the crash, urging them, as good muslims, to believe that there is nothing that happens to man without the knowledge of Allah.

He also commiserated with the President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, saying that the people of Enugu shared the pain of the president at this agonising period when all hands were needed to lift the country up to the next level of greatness.
