Nigerian engineers laud Nnamani on projects
October 18, 2006

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) Enugu State Branch, has commended the state governor, Chimaroke Nnamani, for his countless achievements, especially in aggressive infrastructural development, capacity building and welfare of the people.

The state chairman of the society, Dr. Nwosu Obasi, who gave the commendation when he led members of his executive on a courtesy visit to the Government House, Enugu, stated that through massive and innovative infrastructural development, the governor had brought a lot of changes in the landscape of the state, thereby making the state a tourist attraction to visitors.

"We are pleased to acknowledge the realization of virtually all your projects, which include the ESUT permanent site, ESUT Teaching Hospital, Enugu House Abuja, Ebeano Housing Estate, International Conference Centre, Ebeano Tunnel, Lorna Linda Housing Estate and the Judiciary Headquarters, among others, which are enduring legacies that may be difficult to surpass in the near future," Engineer Obasi stated.

He thanked the governor for employing the services of their members in the execution of projects in the state and pledged their readiness to render more services whenever they were needed.

Dr. Obasi informed the governor that after the assessment of senior engineers from their National Headquarters and their satisfaction, Enugu was chosen as the venue of the 2009 National Conference of the society.

Engineer Obasi said that the theme of the Society's Annual General Meeting (AGM) for 2006 was "Impact of Power Supply on the National Development." He stated that the theme was necessitated by the invaluable role that power supply plays in any nation.

"A nation's strength and weaknesses can only be assessed by the abundance and quality of power generated to sustain various development projects," Dr. Obasi said.

The chairman requested, among other things, provision of accommodation and transport for their special guests to the AGM and the Governor's assistance during the N100 million fund raising for the development of an engineering center in Enugu that would serve as their corporate headquarters in the South East Zone.

Responding, Governor Nnamani described as worrisome the increasing rate of collapsed buildings and quacks in the engineering profession in the country.

The governor, therefore, urged the society to see the issue of collapsed buildings in parts of the country as a challenge and also join hands with government to put in place an enabling law that would help them wage war against quacks in the profession.

The State Chief Executive noted that NSE had come of age, adding that they had also contributed in no small ways to the socio-economic development of the country.

He stated that their contributions and expertise manifested in the various projects his government executed in parts of the state and promised to address their requests within the limited resources available to the state government.
