October 19, 2006

The Provost College of Medicine, University of Nigeria Enugu Campus (UNEC), Professor B. C. Ozumba, has extolled the good virtues and achievements of the Enugu State Governor, Chimaroke Nnamani, since assumption of office.

Speaking when he led new officers of the College on a courtesy visit to the governor at the Government House, Enugu, Prof. Ozumba described the Governor's achievements in the state as unprecedented and unequalled.

According to him, "The College Administration wishes to use this opportunity to extol your achievements in Enugu State which are unprecedented and unequalled."

The College provost specifically noted that the governor's distribution of democracy dividends in the area of infrastructure speaks volumes of his excellent leadership in the state, adding that the college was a beneficiary of his governance.

He thanked the governor for his unwavering keen interest in the affairs of the College, but noted with dismay the gross dilapidation of teaching and learning facilities in the school due to the dwindling funding of the university by the federal government.

Prof. Ozumba noted with satisfaction that the governor, in a bid to enhance teaching and learning, had promised to erect a multipurpose hall for the College at its permanent site at Ituku-Ozalla.

He also stated that the College administration, in the bid to address some of the problems, had set up a network structure called University of Nigeria Nsukka College of Medicine Alumni (UNNCOMA), designed to reach out to its alumni, one of whom is Governor Nnamani, and solicit their assistance to the College.

Responding, Governor Nnamani restated his commitment to the College and gratitude for the foundation it provided for his professional carrier and development.

According to the governor, "I restate my commitment to the College of Medicine, my eternal gratitude for the foundation provided in my professional carrier. I remain ever grateful to my teachers, my colleagues at the university for providing such a healthy environment that gave us confidence, not just in medicine but in dealing with life issues..."

The State Chief Executive acknowledged the role played by the College in the social, educational and medical lives of the people over the years in providing services, research and avenue for training of the people.

According to him, "I must acknowledge the role the College has played in the social, educational and medical lives of our people over the years, providing service, providing research and providing avenue for training of our people."

He commended the officers of the College, especially Prof. Ozumba, for his selfless service, personal sacrifice and for providing a healthy environment for the students over the years.

The Governor explained that his promise to erect a multipurpose hall at the permanent site of the College would be met and expressed the hope that the College's movement to its new site would be completed soon.

On the request to name the proposed hall after the governor, Governor Nnamani made it clear that his administration was not in the habit of naming things after the governor and advised the College authority to name the hall appropriately.
