Enugu PDP to sponsor women for elective posts
November 5, 2006

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State says it would sponsor more women in the 2007 State and National Assembly elections.

The State Governor, Chimaroke Nnamani, announced this while addressing the Ada Chimaroke, a formidable women wing of the PDP from all the local government areas of the state at Okpara Square in Enugu.

Governor Nnamani, who is also the leader of the party in the state, assured the women that a good number of them would be encouraged and sponsored for the council chairman and councillorship elections next year.

According to the governor, "some women would contest for the State House of Assembly election and also have effective representation at the National Assembly."

Governor Nnamani stated that although there are women legislators in the State House of Assembly presently, more women would be given the opportunity to run for the House of Assembly election come 2007.

He said that the party's decision to sponsor more women in the next year's elections was in keeping with its determination to give them more sense of belonging and in recognition of their invaluable contributions to the successes it recorded in the state in the past years.

The governor therefore thanked them for keeping faith with the party and described the women as sincere and loyal party supporters who could be trusted and relied upon anytime and anyday.

Governor Nnamani said: "our women are the real "no shaking" wing of our party. They are absolutely sincere, loyal people. They don't give excuse for non performance."

Governor Nnamani said that the meeting was scheduled to thank the women for the support to the party over the years and contributions towards the successful ward congress in the state at the week end.

The leader of the party in the state reminded them that although the ward congresses were successfully conducted, more efforts must be put in the other scheduled congresses of the party.

He therefore urged them to go all out and ensure that they mobilize their members, especially those who had fallen by the way side.

More than ten thousand members of the women group attended the solidarity rally and consultation meeting.
