SEPTEMBER 16, 2004: Governor Chimaroke
Nnamani was conferred with yet another prestigious award from the academia,
this time the Honorary Fellowship Award of the National Postgraduate
Medical College of Nigeria, Ijanikin, Lagos. This, according to the
College, was in recognition of his innovative strides in healthcare
delivery and health sector reforms which has seen the ongoing construction of a new
medical school and teaching hospital for the State University, the
new health district system under which 7 hospitals across the state
are being upgraded refurbished, and reequipped, the comprehensive renovation
of the Parklane Specialist Hospital, construction of rural cottage
hospitals, and many more. Yet as the Governor confessed in an extempore
acceptance speech which drew a deafening, standing ovation from the
distinguished personalities present, he was rather shy to such awards
by men, insisting that the award he cherished most was the ultimate,
permanent one by God Almighty. Governor Nnamani, who reaffirmed his
faith in the professional competence of health practitioners in Nigeria,
also used the occasion to renew his call for a unitarised and affordable
heath system for Nigeria, to be headed by a Surgeon General who will
serve as the nation's conscience and symbol of excellence in healthcare.
