2004 CHILDREN'S DAY: Enugu State children enjoyed a two day public limelight as the State Governor, Chimaroke Nnamani, led other top functionaries of the state to focus attention on their problems and aspirations on the occasion of this year’s Children’s Day celebration. Activities marking the Children’s Day began on May 26, 2004 with a Children’s Parliament, a question and answer session between the governor and school children, held at the Banquet Hall of the Governor’s Lodge. The highlights of the event were the Governor’s proclamation of free education for all handicapped students in the state (following a presentation by a deaf and dumb student), a commitment to present a bill to the legislature to outlaw child hawking, and the presentation of the governor with 9 trophies won by schools in the state in various national quiz and sporting competitions. The grand finale of the Children’s Day the following day at the Okpara Square, Enugu, featured match past and cultural displays by both primary and secondary schools across the state.
