Ever since coming into office Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani has pursued the
responsibilities of governance with passion and dedication. Road rehabilitation
and construction occupies a special place in the heart of the young
and energetic Governor, investing already well over N4 billion in the
sector. This figure includes a component of N600 million for rehabilitating
federal roads advanced to the state by the federal government out of
N1.2 billion spent on federal roads.
Fact in summary: Over 500 km of
solid asphalt roads 100% completed. It is instructive to observe that smooth and wide network of roads that make driving within the state capital a pleasurable experience greets a first-time visitor to the state. Specifically, there is the Enugu Ring Road network handled by the German construction firm, Messrs. STRABAG Nigeria Limited; rehabilitation of Enugu and Nsukka urban roads, which have already been delivered. The government also rehabilitated inter-city roads and opened up new ones. There are plans for government to deliver the Enugu Road Network by the year 2003. This road which starts from Enugu urban traverses the entire state joining the various neighbouring states of Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra and Benue. As at February 2003 the roads in Enugu State rehabilitated or constructed by the Nnamani led administration all put together are well over 400 kilometres long, and work are still going on some more. As a standard, all the roads are covered with asphalt tar, a single coat surface with dressed shoulders. The Enugu urban roads are the Enugu Ring Road Network and Enugu Urban linking Nike Lake to Ehamufu, Abakpa Nike and Trans Ekulu Layout. Others are Ngbemena Road, Kenyatta Road, Robinson Street, Achara Layout Phase II and Ozalla - Agbani Road, etc. OBOLLO-AFOR - OGRUTE ROAD in Uduenu Local Government Area from Ninth Mile, Enugu, to Makurdi road, including the spur at the junction of Ogrute is fifteen (15) kilometres long. It was executed at the cost of N300 million. The road has an asphalt concrete course and it is dressed at the shoulders. The road branches off to Effe at the border between Enugu and Kogi States, it then veers into Nsukka road, which has also been completed. OJI RIVER - ACHI - AWGU ROAD is very strategic in that it links up vital parts of the state. The ten-kilometre road, which was constructed by the administration of Governor Chimaroke Nnamani, is important for facilitating inter-city transportation. UDI - OZALLA ROAD, at 10 kilometres, is also strategic because it links towns and communities in the Enugu-West Senatorial District, which comprises Udi, Oji River - Awgu and Ezeagu Local Government areas Councils. Work on the road commenced early last year, and is still in progress.
